Preston Cates, age 84, of Dunlap, TN passed away, Sunday, August 25, 2024 at Erlanger Bledsoe. Preston was a member of Daus Baptist Church. He loved his grandchildren, bluegrass music and reading. He was the owner of Cates Pharmacy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tommie and Beatrice Cates; sisters, Sue Cates Amundson and Martha Cates Layne.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carolyn Cates; daughter, Carla Rhea Cates, Chattanooga; sons, Preston Ellis "Tony" Cates, Jr, Chattanooga, and Marshall Brent Cates, Whitwell; grandchildren, Alex (Brea) Pirkle, Andrew (Liz) Pirkle, Jake (Victoria), Blake (Kaytlin), Kyle (Anna Kate), Preston Ellis "Pep" III, Julia, and Ellis Cates; sister, Tommie Mae Mullins, NV; several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, August 29, at 5:00 p.m. CDT in the Funeral Home Chapel with Blake Cates officiating. Online condolences can be made at www.reedfamilyfh.com. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in his memory to Sequatchie County Cancer Support Network, The Gideons International, or a charity of your choice. Arrangements by Standefer-Reed Funeral Home, 50 May Road, Dunlap, TN. Family will receive friends Thursday, 1:00-5:00 p.m. CDT.
