Please share a memory of Percy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Percy Charles Smith went to heaven at 1:15 AM on August 29th while sleeping peacefully at home with his family present; he was 90 years old. Percy was born October 22, 1922 in Bluefield West Virginia and was raised by his maternal grandmother in Richmond VA. Percy joined the US Navy immediately after the Pearl Harbor attack and served until the end of the war, seeing service in the Aleutian Islands on a PT boat and in the Okinawa invasion. After the war, he entered college on the GI bill and met Sylvia Mae Evans also from Richmond. Much to Percy's good fortune, they married on March 25, 1948 and were inseparable for all 66 years. Percy and Sylvia moved from Richmond to Aiken SC and eventually to Chattanooga with Dupont where Percy was Powerhouse Maintenance Superintendent retiring in 1977. During their marriage they raised four sons and settled at the Flibeta Boat Club on Chickamauga Lake in Soddy Daisy. With the help of their four boys, they built two houses at the club and have lived happily there for over 40 yrs. Percy leaves a family legacy of love and devotion through his wife Sylvia; his four sons and their wives: Kirk and Beth, Glenn and Kay, Dean and Joan, and Gary and Trina; his grandchildren, Clay, Kristen; Angela, Alan, Aaron, Alden; Chad, Ryan, Lauren; Jessica, Adam, Hannah; as well as great grandchildren. The family is celebrating his life in a private gathering of family and closest friends. The family requests that any expressions of sympathy be made as donations to The Hospice of Chattanooga.
