I never meant Wayne but for over 30 years we talked on and off via phone on many subjects. He knew the reality of the world and I always was interested in hearing from him. I will greatly miss those conversations. He was a person I greatly respected.

We had a fun get together when Jane and I came up in October from Florida and enjoyed dinner at Wayne's home. It was the first time in years we got to see each other and was filled with fun and lots of love!
We visited in 2014 with Jane and 2015 Jacksonville and Fernandina cousins from Florida came for the July 4th barbecue Wayne had every year. Family and friends were everything to him. We had a lot of fun and laughs with each other.

I grew up not far from Wayne and we first met riding the school bus to elementary school and we did all 12 years in public education. Wayne was unusual. Unusually calm, unusually friendly in a quiet way, and unusually modest. I ran into him a few years ago and he was in the midst of doing an act of kindness. When I think of a great American man, I think of Wayne Griffith
