Era Kelly Hixson, age 104, of Dunlap, TN passed away Tuesday August 17, 2010. She lived in Sequatchie County most of her life until 2003 when she moved to an assisted living facility in Chattanooga and later to St. Barnabas nursing where she was well cared for the past year. In 2006 she and her twin sister Vera celebrated their 100th birthday.
She was a wonderful mother, housewife, and was active in the Dunlap United Methodist Church and belonged to a loving Sunday School Class who we asked to be honorary pallbearers.
She was preceded in death in 1953 by her husband, Stephen H. Hixson, a Dunlap business man, also by two sisters and two brothers.
Her survivors are Dr. Jack (Dot) Hixson of Chattanooga, Gene (Linda) Hixson, Dunlap and Gayle (Bob) Thornton, Franklin Lakes, NJ; grandchildren, Steve and Mark Hixson, Vallerie Greer, Bob Thornton Jr, and Gay Doherty; step grandchildren, Julia and Kyle Barker; nine great grandchildren, David, Allison, Andrew and Kyle Hixson, Steve and John Greer, Taylor, Tucker and Jackson Doherty.
The funeral service will be Saturday at 10 a.m. CDT in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Gerald Casson officiating. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family request gifts be made to Dunlap United Methodist Church, 1958 Main St., Dunlap, TN 37327 or a charity of your choice. Arrangements by Putnam-Standefer-Reed Funeral Home, 50 May Road, Dunlap. Family will receive friends Friday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. CDT.
